Recognition & visa

I just graduated as a medical imaging technologist, what should I do?

Recognition

From December 2, 2014, you must be in possession of recognition to work as a medical imaging technologist.

The benefits of recognition:

  • Your recognition protects your title. Only you may carry out the services specified by law.

  • Your recognition guarantees that you have received recognized vocational training.

  • Your recognition requires that you continually update your knowledge by completing further training.

  • Your recognition allows you to choose your colleagues who will participate in the councils and committees that represent your profession before the competent authority.

Previously, as a graduated technologist, you had to submit an application for recognition to the Flemish Agency for Care and Health. From 2018, recognition will be automatic. The student administration of the university of applied sciences forwards all data of the graduates to the Flemish Agency for Care and Health, so that recognition takes place automatically. As a recently graduated Technologist, you no longer have to do anything.

The Flemish Agency for Care and Health will send the recognition to you by post.

Visa

Your visa is your work permit or your 'licence to practice', you need it to be able to work. The visa is issued by the FPS Public Health.

When you have received recognition from the Flemish Agency for Care and Health, the FPS Public Health will be automatically contacted and your visa will be sent. So you do not have to take any steps yourself towards the FPS Public Health: it is the relevant community that follows up on your file. What is the difference between the visa and recognition?

The recognition is a title that demonstrates that the holder has successfully completed theoretical and practical training to practice the profession of medical imaging technologist. The recognition can only be withdrawn if you do not follow further training or if you are not considered 'competent' with regard to your professional qualification. The recognition can be re-awarded when you demonstrate that you have updated your knowledge.

The visa is the permit required to practice the profession. If the medical imaging technologist becomes mentally or physically unable to work, their visa will be revoked. A visa can be revoked under certain conditions, temporarily or permanently.
